Looking for quiet study places is disturbingly frustrating…in the library. Although it’s billed as the largest social science library in Europe in terms of volumes of books, it doesn’t quite accommodate every student. Finding other places, therefore, is important for Facebook stalking, err, reading.
Vera Conference – Nice and quiet. Sometimes it might be booked around the noon hour, but it’s usually pretty empty. It’s not too tricky to get here. Walk inside the Old Building and take the stairs up. Between the first and ground floors are a set of doors that lead to bathrooms and another set of doors on your right. Walk through the doors to a small study room. The conference is on the other side.
Program and Departmental Study Rooms – Ask your department where these study rooms are located. Their size, quality, and occupancy varies by department. The accounting and economics programs have pretty large and modern workspaces, while smaller courses have much smaller and slightly older rooms.
Main Library – The library is fairly large, but it gets crowded during the day, especially the peak hours from 11AM-3PM. The lower floor has around a hundred computer terminals and some beanbags. Floors 1-3 have more seating areas intermixed in stacks of books. The 4th floor is one of the more quieter areas with spacious study zones.
Shaw Library – Located at the top of the Old Building, Shaw is very quiet, but there aren’t many seats, making it less useful.
Select Classrooms – A few of them are pretty big and usually completely empty after 7pm. Try Accounting classrooms in the Old Building, Floor 3.
